♥What is Cross Stitch?♥

Cross-Stitch Heart

Cross stitch is the oldest form of embroidery. It's a simple process of drawing a thread across a canvas creating 'X' shaped stitches. This is where the name 'Cross Sitch' derives from as you cross the threads diagonally to form the stitch. The old form of 'samplers' also has its place among cross stitch. Before the invention of patterns and charts, stitchers created stitches on fabric strips as a reference point. The most common use of cross-stitching now is as wall decor, though it can be used anywhere, including in fiber arts such as crochet and knit.

The most popular canvas material for cross stitching is Aida cloth. The threads on this cloth are counted by inch. The more threads per inch, the smaller the stitches form. This makes the finished size of a project larger or smaller as well.
